Muktinath Temple, one of the holy temples of Nepal dedicated to Lord Vishnu, is located in Mustang district at an altitude of 3710 m. 

It lies in the trans-Himalayan region, surrounded by gorgeous landscapes and snow peaks, and this makes the journey to the temple fulfilling in both spiritual and visual aspects.

An ideal time to visit Muktinath is between March to June and from September through December. The weather stays pretty much clear during these months, with moderate temperatures and clear views of the mountains. 

January and February are affected when cold and snow falls can be encountered, while in July and August monsoon season causes various kinds of roadblocks due to landslides, and flight cancellations are also common.

The entire trip from Kathmandu to Muktinath, or from Pokhara to Muktinath, can be completed by air and road journey, or if going straight from Kathmandu, it can be a combination of both.

Air Travel

To travel via air, one can take a flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara and another flight from Pokhara to Jomsom (Please note that the flight from Pokhara to Jomsom and vice versa runs only in the morning once a day). Then, a drive from Jomsom to Muktinath is around 30 minutes, which covers a distance of 23 KM.

For those seeking luxury travel, there is availability of chartered helicopter service directly to Muktinath from both Pokhara and Kathmandu. However, the helicopter should be booked on a private basis and cost significantly higher.

Road Travel

For road travel, transportation will be arranged according to the group size from Kathmandu to Pokhara (private car, jeep, bus, coach or hiace). However, from Pokhara jeeps will be arranged to Muktinath temple despite the number of people.

Note: We advise combining flights and road travel to get the most out of your trip to Muktinath from Kathmandu. Flying from Kathmandu to Pokhara can save you a lot of time on the road, and since the morning flight from Pokhara to Jomsom is sometimes unreliable, it is preferable to drive from Pokhara to Jomsom.

On the road, one has to pass around 170 KM from Pokhara to Muktinath, with the mountain terrain making it around 5 hours for the drive-up to Jomsom and a further hour to the temple. 

Road conditions fluctuate from smooth to offroad. While almost 80% of the road condition is good, 20% of it is still under construction.

At an altitude of around 3,710 meters, some travelers may experience mild symptoms of altitude sickness while at the Muktinath temple, such as headache or fatigue. 

Staying hydrated, ascending gradually, and spending a night in Jomsom (2,700 meters) before heading to Muktinath are the ways for acclimatization. Serious altitude-related problems on this very short trip are quite rare.

Children and elderly people are visiting Muktinath temple in big numbers every year. However, with high altitude, preparation in advance is advised; especially for senior citizens, it is advised to consult a doctor if they have any heart/respiratory problems.

The available accommodations in Jomsom and Muktinath are generally simple, while Jomsom has a large number of options, with some mid-range hotels offering hot showers, attached bathrooms, and local food. 

However, Muktinath has limited options ranging from guest houses and local hotels to a few decent hotels, some of which are more comfortable than others. WiFi and power supply functioning are available but room heating is available at limited properties.

The flights between Pokhara and Jomsom are highly dependent upon the weather and get canceled mostly during the monsoon and winter seasons.

On cancellation of a flight, travelers can wait for the next possible flight or continue the journey by road using a jeep. Normally, tour operators like us would provide an alternative for driving in case flights get cancelled.
